Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter welcomes "Mrs. President" to Rochester
One of the most powerful women in congress, Congresswoman Slaughter’s mission has been inspired by her strong ties to Rochester and upstate New York. Her unique voice in Congress has grown not only from the policies she has championed, but also from the path she has taken as a pioneering woman in public office. When she began her career, it was relatively rare for women to hold elected office, and she was the first woman to represent western New York. She continued to break new ground when she was named the first female chair of the powerful House Committee on Rules in 2007.
As one of the longest-serving female leaders of the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Slaughter has long been a prominent voice for women and diversity. In addition, she has been a long time supporter of the arts. Here, so generously welcoming "Mrs. President" the opera to Rochester for the centennial celebration of women's right to vote in New York State:
“I am so pleased to welcome composer and conductor Victoria Bond to Rochester’s historic Lyric Theatre to celebrate the centennial anniversary of women’s right to vote in New York State. The production Mrs. President tells the inspiring story of Victoria Woodhull, who ran for president of the United States in 1872 before any woman even had the right to vote. Woodhull had a unique connection to Rochester. Her distant relative, Nancy Woodhull, was also a true trailblazer as the first managing editor for news at USA Today, who lived and died in Rochester and was a dear friend. This inspiring performance tells the story of our state as we continue working to make progress nationwide."
The performance is at The Lyric Theatre in Rochester (440 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14607) on November 18, 2017 at 7:00 pm.
